Deep Roots and Steady Hands: Noel Bull’s enduring impact on forestry in the Green Triangle

After nearly two decades of quiet leadership, methodical excellence, and tireless commitment to sustainable forestry, SFM’s Regional Forester Noel Bull has been named a finalist in the 2025 Green Triangle Timber Industry Awards. Nominated in the category Excellence in Operations – Silviculture & Plantation Management, the recognition marks a career built on consistency, care, and connection to the land.

For those who know him, the honour comes as no surprise.

“Noel’s the kind of person who just makes things happen,” said Chloe Juul, SFM’s Sustainability and Compliance Officer.  “He doesn’t overthink it — he knows what needs doing and gets on with it. He’s practical, down-to-earth, and really cares about his work and his community.”

A forester with foundations

Since joining SFM in 2014, Noel has become an integral part of the company’s Green Triangle operations, managing large-scale silvicultural programs across thousands of hectares of plantation estate. His reputation is one of diligence and depth – a professional who doesn’t seek accolades but earns them naturally through his work.

With over 45 years of industry experience, Noel has seen the forestry landscape evolve dramatically. From the collapse of managed investment schemes to the rise of sustainable, carbon-conscious forestry models, his work has remained rooted in long-term thinking and adaptive, responsible management.

“Noel has a real respect for the landscape and the communities connected to it,” said SFM’s Chief Operations Officer, Mike Lawson. “You can see that in the way he engages with landowners and contractors. It’s never transactional – it’s always about relationships and shared outcomes.”

Stewardship, not just operations

The GTTIA nomination recognises excellence in the often-unseen world of plantation management – where success is measured not just in volume or yield, but in safety, sustainability, and the resilience of the forests under care.

Noel’s approach to operations is exacting. He sets high standards for safety, communication and environmental performance – and expects the same from the contractors and teams he works with. Under his leadership, SFM’s silvicultural programs in the Green Triangle have become known for their precision, professionalism, and environmental integrity.

But it’s the way he carries that responsibility – quietly, with humility and steadiness – that sets him apart.

The mentor in the field

Over the years, Noel has played a crucial role in supporting and mentoring new entrants into the industry. Whether it’s junior foresters finding their feet, or contractors navigating complex on-ground programs, he is always willing to share his knowledge, offer guidance, and walk alongside others as they learn.

“Noel’s the kind of mentor who helps you grow without you even realising it,” Chloe reflected. “He encourages me to think differently about how I contribute to my community and challenges me to be better.”

A quiet force for good

In an industry where pressure can run high and seasons can turn quickly, Noel’s consistency is a grounding force. His deep familiarity with the Green Triangle’s soils, weather patterns, plantation history and operational rhythms gives SFM a strategic advantage – and gives colleagues confidence that, with Noel at the helm, things are in good hands.

Outside of his professional role, Noel is also a dedicated volunteer with the local Country Fire Authority (CFA) brigade — a commitment that speaks to his deep sense of responsibility for both people and place – especially the region he calls home.

“Noel embodies the values we hold at SFM – professionalism, stewardship, and respect for the landscapes we manage,” said Managing Director Andrew Morgan. “His GTTIA finalist recognition is not only a personal achievement, but a moment of pride for the entire SFM team.”
